Meet the Team: Fred Old on the Grapevine

by Katie Williams

Each month we introduce one of our Ambrose Fox team members. For our clients who rarely see what goes on behind the scenes, we would like to show the range of individuals that make Ambrose Fox. This month we speak to our Junior Web Developer, Fred Old.

What do you do at Ambrose Fox and in what circumstances would I come to you for something?

I am a front-end and React developer at Ambrose Fox. Right now I’m working on the FAI project and doing most of the front-end work on that using React. You would come to me with any React questions.

What skill do you think everyone should learn?

I think everyone should learn to meditate. It calms the mind and it’s been really helpful to me when I’ve struggled with anxiety.

If you could switch jobs with someone, who would it be?

Vitalik Buterin. He’s one of the founders of Ethereum and has tons of it – millions of pounds worth. And it would be fun to work on cryptocurrency.

What are we most likely to find you doing on the weekend?

On the weekends I tend to watch Youtube and try to code at the same time. I don’t want to feel like I’m still working on the weekends so I watch Youtube while I write code on my own projects. I’ve done some Game Development in the past but I’m currently working on Web Development. My current project is using Three.js, the 3D library for Javascript, with React and making an interactive timeline of the Erebus and Terror expedition to the Arctic. It’s a really interesting expedition; I watched a series about it and I thought it would make a cool 3D project. It’s going well but I work on it slowly. It’s fun learning something new and 3D is fun to work with, seeing it in the web browser is quite cool.

What’s one hobby you’d love to get into?

Dungeons and Dragons. I have a friend who is a Dungeon Master so I’m just waiting for a proper invitation so I can go and do some role play.

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be an Inventor. I liked making things and still do like making things.

If you could have an unlimited supply of one thing, what would it be?

An unlimited supply of energy or power would be the clever answer, then you could solve every problem. A more fun answer would be chocolate ice cream.

Which fictional family would you want to be a part of?

Maybe the Lannister’s from Game of Thrones. They’re not the nicest people around but you wouldn’t want to be in any of the other families!

What’s one professional skill you’re currently working on?

I’m currently expanding my knowledge on Node.JS and back-end development.

What’s your guilty pleasure?

Ordering food from Deliveroo or UberEats. It’s way too expensive, you could probably buy a week’s worth of shopping for the price but it does save you cooking. I’ve been going through all the vegan restaurants nearby, trying them all and ticking them all off.
